Fort Worth police officer shoots Atatiana Jefferson, playing video games with her nephew

As Brad and I were driving to Island County Superior Court we were listening to all the news stations talking about the shooting death of Atatiana Jefferson, 28 years old.

On October 13, 2019, Atatiana was playing video games in her bedroom with her 8-year old nephew. Apparently, at the same time, a neighbor called the police after seeing their door ajar for several hours. The neighbor first checked on the house and then called the nonemergency police number to make sure everyone was safe. Two officers arrived around 2 a.m. and walked into the back yard. A white male officer, Aaron Dean, saw Atatiana through her bedroom window. He shouted at her to put her hands up and did not announce his presence. Without waiting for a response, Dean immediately fired a shot through the glass, with her nephew in the room. Atatiana was pronounced dead by 3:05 a.m. Later, in a statement by the Fort Worth police department, Dean said that he had perceived a “threat.” What threat is enough to kill a young woman in her own home, through a window, with a child present? Dean resigned the next day, was arrested and charged with murder. I hope the investigation restores some faith that the police are supposed to protect, not kill.
